Historic England failing Cambridge. Again.

I’m lost for words at the bland acquiescence of Historic England’s response to the rage-generating carbuncle at the southern gateway into Cambridge. This response must be challenged

“Again” because they should have insisted Brookgate rebuild the Fosters Mill Silo at Cambridge Station ***down to the last moss-covered roof tile***.

TL/DR? Whatever your views of this application are (See the GCSP Portal here and search Ref: 25/04039/FUL. It’s for “Demolition of the existing building and structures, erection of an office building” on the corner of Station Road and Hills Road”), submit your comments via the portal following the guidance here, or if that’s too complicated simply email your city councillor via https://www.writetothem.com/ and ask them to submit your comment on your behalf.

Above from the GCSP Portal Ref: 25/04039/FUL. – it’s the taller building in the background

Above – this is the scree you should get on the documents’ tab. Click on the icon to the right of the words Historic England and their response should come up.

Above – Historic England to Cambridge City Council 17 Nov 2025

“To challenge Historic England’s advice on a planning application, you should first contact the local authority to submit your concerns as part of the public consultation process, using the specified 21-day period.”

The search engine’s AI-advice which I didn’t ask for but will follow anyway

If Historic England are unable to stir themselves to oppose this application for a bland identikit could-be-anywhere development they may as well shut themselves down and hand over the task to an institution more willing to stand up to such miserable planning applications utterly lacking in colour and imagination.

There.
