Ministers confirm Cambridge East Station, and Eastern Entrance for Cambridge Station

Clear? Didn’t think it was! One refers to a new station entrance we’ve been waiting 75 years for, while another is a new station on the Cambridge-Newmarket line possibly by the southern edge of the airport

“As well as a new eastern entrance at Cambridge Central, set to significantly improve access to the surrounding communities, EWR Co’s plans also include a new Cambridge East station, designed to drive major economic growth and reduce congestion for the area.”

*You said, we did!*

  • Cambridge East: Exploring a new station near Coldham’s Lane to improve access and ease pressure on the city’s main station.

Can’t complain! You can see Cambridge Station as is on G-Maps below.

So you can sort of see the space for the eastern entrance is already being prepared.

Above – Holford and Wright’s recommendation in the Cambridge Planning Proposals of 1950 which I featured in this 2022 piece calling for an eastern entrance

A couple of years later, the city and county councils decided it would be a good idea as well and responded to the EWR Consultation accordingly (this blogpost also has a picture of the dragon slide if you’ve not seen it).

“Where exactly is Cambridge East likely to be?”

Right where I recommended it should be! Which is awfully nice of them!

There will be a new Platform 9 at Cambridge Station

Additional things at Cambridge.

Long Road bridge – works could last up to three months

“The existing structure has some elements that will need to be replaced very soon, such as the metal piers and deck, and therefore would likely need to be replaced regardless of the EWR proposals. Options include a full road closure on Long Road for a minimum of 6 to 13 weeks, using modern methods of construction such as off-site pre-fabrication to keep the closure time to a minimum”

Interestingly there will be new and improved entrances to the sports pitches either side of Long Road Bridge

“The bridge for the guided busway would not be impacted by the new bridge over the railway at Long Road, however as part of the construction works, the entrance to St Mary’s School and Homerton College playing fields would be upgraded, and a new entrance to Cantabs Rugby Club would be provided from Long Road.”

It looks like the application to the Transport Secretary should take place this time next year if all goes well.

Now…to say something in BBC Radio Cambridgeshire in a few hours time. (It’s gone 2.30am and I’m on in just under five hours!)
