In the meantime the CPCA Mayor Paul Bristow was at the Time for Trams event in Coventry Sadly there’s no livestream but I’m assuming something will be written up for next month’s Tramways and Urban Transit Magazine. (Am I the only person in the city who reads it!?!?)

“When are we getting trams and light rail?”
In 1904 the old Cambridge Borough Council approved the proposals to electrify the old horse-drawn tramway that ran from the railway station into town, looping around Market Square and King’s Parade, before heading to the Tram Depot off East Road (hence the name of the pub that bears its name)

When transport officers use terms such as ‘Mass Rapid Transit’ or ‘High Quality Public Transport Corridor’ it triggers me into a rage. If they mean ‘Buses’ then they should say so. [And then be replaced by people competent and willing enough to deliver trams and light rail because that’s what the public originally called for back in 1990!]

In my local history blog Lost Cambridge, I wrote about the surveys undertaken by the old Cambridge Evening News as was, at a time when its daily circulation was over 40,000 a day and when readers would phone the newspaper’s ‘hotline’ when they wanted to complain about something.

Note the impact trams and light rail has had on housing in France. It will be interesting to see what the Government’s Mass Transit Task Force announced back in May 2026 has to say when it reports at the end of the year – November 2026 being the scheduled month according to the original announcement here.
